Competitor Backlink Analysis

Competitor backlink analysis examines sites linking to competing websites to identify relevant referral relationships, content opportunities, and potential outreach prospects.

Competitor backlink analysis studies the external pages that link to another business or publisher. The useful question is not simply how many links a competitor has, but why someone linked: a local chamber directory may list members, an industry association may cite a guide, or a community newsletter may mention a project. These contexts suggest different kinds of opportunities.

Start with a small set of true search competitors, not every business in the same industry. Export their referring domains, inspect representative linking pages, and categorize the links by relevance, editorial reason, location, and whether the source is active. A backlink tool's authority or toxicity score is a proprietary estimate, not a Google ranking score. Treat lost links and apparent gaps as leads to investigate rather than a checklist to copy.

A sensible outcome is a short editorial plan: publish a genuinely useful resource, contribute a relevant local partnership, or correct a missing business citation. Buying or exchanging links to manipulate search ranking risks violating search engine spam policies. Link research is distinct from competitor keyword research, which examines topics and search demand rather than third-party references.
