Community-Led Growth

Community-led growth is a strategy in which ongoing interactions among members help a business learn, build trust and earn repeat participation.

Community-led growth treats a group of customers, users or practitioners as more than an audience for announcements. Members may help one another, share experiences, suggest improvements and recommend a useful product to peers. The organization’s role is to support valuable interaction and respond openly to recurring needs, not to manufacture endorsements.

A community can exist in a forum, local group, event series or customer program. Teams should define membership purpose, moderation rules, privacy expectations and ways to feed learning into the product or service. Measures could include recurring useful participation, resolved questions and retention, while recognizing that growth caused by the community may be difficult to isolate from other channels.

This differs from community management, which is the day-to-day practice of moderating and engaging participants. Community-led growth is the broader strategic hypothesis that community value can contribute to acquisition, retention or product learning. A busy comment section alone does not establish the strategy's success.
