Business Model Canvas

The Business Model Canvas is a nine-block visual framework used to describe how a business creates, delivers, and captures value.

The Business Model Canvas provides a one-page view of a business model rather than a lengthy operational plan. Its nine connected blocks are customer segments, value propositions, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partners, and cost structure. Mapping them together exposes assumptions about who pays, what they value, and what the business must do to serve them.

A local landscaping operator might put homeowners and property managers in separate customer segments, distinguish routine maintenance from specialized tree work in the value proposition, and identify referrals or online search as channels. Labor and equipment are resources; scheduling and on-site execution are activities; suppliers may be partners. The revenue and cost blocks then test whether the arrangement can be sustainable.

Completing the canvas is not proof that the model works. Its strongest use is to turn a vague strategy into assumptions that can be checked through interviews, pricing tests, operating data, and actual sales. The creator’s Strategyzer materials describe the canvas as one model at a time; a company with distinct business lines may need separate versions. It is different from a marketing plan or a website sitemap.
