AVIF Image Format
AVIF is a modern image format based on AV1 compression that can store photographs and other images with efficient file sizes.
AVIF stands for AV1 Image File Format. It supports lossy and lossless encoding, transparency and other image capabilities, making it a useful option for image-heavy websites. Whether an AVIF file is smaller or looks better than a WebP or JPEG alternative depends on the image, encoder settings and quality target; conversion alone does not guarantee a better result.
AVIF is broadly supported by modern browsers, but a site may still need fallbacks for older clients and unusual environments. The HTML picture element can serve an AVIF source first and another supported format as a fallback. Designers should also maintain appropriate pixel dimensions, descriptive alternative text and a responsive image delivery strategy.
To decide whether to use AVIF, compare actual file weights and visual quality at the sizes visitors receive. Loading performance can also depend on caching, layout stability, CDN behavior and whether the image is initially visible. An oversized AVIF image can still slow a page.
