Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Answer engine optimization is a marketing label for making useful information discoverable and understandable in search experiences that present direct answers.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) describes efforts to help content provide a clear, trustworthy response when search engines or AI-driven interfaces assemble answers. The label overlaps with conventional SEO, content design, and sometimes Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). It is not a universally standardized technical protocol.
Practical work may include answering genuine customer questions, demonstrating expertise, keeping factual material current, making pages crawlable, and showing how claims are supported. For a local service company, a strong explanation of what happens during an emergency tree removal can help visitors understand the process whether they arrive through a standard result or an AI-assisted answer.
Google's 2026 guidance explicitly says that foundational SEO still applies to its generative search features and that there are no special markup or machine-readable files required to appear. It also discourages shortcuts that attempt to game AI citation. No provider can promise an AEO treatment that guarantees a mention in a particular answer.
The useful distinction is an editorial emphasis on concise answerability and supporting evidence; many of the underlying tasks are already sound SEO practice. Avoid creating duplicated pages for every question variant.
