AI Citation

An AI citation is a visible reference or link that an AI-generated answer presents in association with information from another source.

AI search interfaces may include inline links, source panels or other references that help readers examine information supporting an answer. These citations are not identical across products: Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and conversational systems can choose different sources and formats. A link appearing next to a generated summary does not prove that every sentence was derived accurately from the linked page.

For publishers, the useful question is whether a cited link points to a relevant, accessible and authoritative page. Track actual referral visits when available, compare branded search and content discovery trends, and inspect how an answer characterizes the source. Do not promise that structured data, a special AI file or a particular content length will force a citation; Google's AI-search documentation explicitly says additional AI-specific markup is not required for eligibility.

An AI citation differs from a local business citation, which is an online mention of a business's identity details such as name, address or phone number. It also differs from a formal academic reference with controlled citation standards. The term should focus on user-visible attribution in AI-generated responses, not speculative ranking formulas.
