Accessible Form Labels

Accessible form labels clearly identify the purpose of fields such as name, email, phone number, and service details.

Accessible form labels clearly identify the purpose of fields such as name, email, phone number, and service details. They help everyone understand what information belongs in each field, including people using screen readers or other assistive technologies. A visible placeholder that disappears when someone starts typing is not always a reliable substitute for a label. Labels should be programmatically associated with their controls and paired with understandable instructions and error messages when needed. On a handyman quote form, “Service address or ZIP code” provides more guidance than “Location.” Proper labeling is one part of website accessibility; it does not, by itself, establish that a form or site meets every accessibility requirement.
